“A Rigged Budget for a Rigged Economy” NH Groups Slam House Republican Budget Ahead of Thursday Vote
CONCORD, NH – Five leading grassroots organizations representing thousands of Granite Staters—603 Forward, MomsRising, New Hampshire Youth Movement, Granite State Organizing Project, and Rights and Democracy—issued a joint condemnation today of the House Republican budget, calling it a reckless plan that deepens inequality and sells out working families to protect the wealthy and powerful.
“This budget doesn’t reflect our shared values. It reflects a rigged economy where the rich get richer, corporations get tax breaks, and the rest of us are left paying the price,” the organizations said. “Republican lawmakers are choosing to gut the programs thousands of working families rely on and raise taxes on folks who can least afford it— just so their wealthy donors and out-of-state corporate allies can keep cashing in. That’s not fiscal responsibility. That’s economic sabotage.”
The House GOP budget slashes $643 million from the Governor’s already devastating proposal, while depositing $113 million into the state’s Rainy Day Fund. At the same time, it makes deep and sweeping cuts to public college funding, child care assistance, mental health services, and Medicaid—all while continuing to protect tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the ultra-wealthy and multinational corporations.
603 Forward – Medicaid Cuts
“I’m a working parent, who like many Granite Staters, are part of the ‘Sandwich Generation’–taking care of both kids and aging parents. The astronomical rising costs of medicaid premiums and health care in this proposed budget is a tax hike on working people who are already spread thin. This budget makes it harded to raise a family in New Hampshire and is a slap in the face, passing these costs onto our workforce while padding the pockets of corporations and the top 1%.” – Julianne Gadoury, Executive Director, 603 Forward
MomsRising – Child Care Cuts
“At a time when families across New Hampshire are stretched thin and child care providers are barely hanging on–this budget offers them no lifeline. It’s missing clear, intentional investment in child care–and fails to address the deeper issues families are facing every day. New Hampshire needs a budget that moves beyond vague intentions and makes bold, targeted investments in child care and the programs that families count on to survive and thrive.” – MacKenzie Nicholson, Senior Director, MomsRising New Hampshire
NH Youth Movement – Higher Ed Cuts
“They’re cutting $50 million from public colleges. That means higher tuition for me and fewer students coming or staying in New Hampshire, strangling our economy. It’s like a deliberate attempt to push young people - our future workforce- out of New Hampshire. We want to stay here, we want to build our lives here, but our current government is making that close to impossible. — Jeremiah Githu, Plymouth Hub Coordinator, NH Youth Movement
Granite State Organizing Project – Increasing Health Care Costs
"Health is a universal concern that transcends color, race, age and socioeconomic status. Illness does not discriminate, and no individual should be denied access to care due to their background or financial situation. Cuts to Medicaid will disproportionately impact individuals from all demographics, exacerbating existing inequalities. Our lawmakers should be focused on making healthcare more affordable and accessible to all Granite Staters, rather than implementing policies that limit access to care for those who need it most." Lois Numbi— Grassroots Leader, Granite State Organizing Project.
Rights and Democracy – Mental Health Cuts
“A 37% cut to mental health programs is not just dangerous—it’s cruel. People will be hurt, families will feel the strain, and our communities will suffer. And why? Just so Republicans can protect their tax cuts that only benefit a handful of the richest people in the world and greedy corporations while the rest of us are left paying the price. Families across New Hampshire are working harder than ever and still falling behind.” — Dögg Hugosdóttir, Deputy Director, Rights & Democracy
The Real Reason for the Cuts? A Broken Tax Code That Favors the Rich and Multinational Corporations
New analysis from the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute makes clear that these cuts are not due to lack of funds—they are the result of deliberate tax policy choices by Republican leadership over the past decade.
Between 2015 and 2024, New Hampshire gave away between $795 million and $1.17 billion in revenue through business tax cuts—money that could have funded schools, health care, child care, and housing. These tax cuts have overwhelmingly benefitted large corporations and the wealthiest residents, while doing little to boost economic growth or job creation.
At the same time, working families are paying more in property taxes and user fees as the state downshifts costs onto towns and cities. From local roads to public safety to schools, the bill keeps landing on the same people—while the wealthiest get a free pass.
We Need a Budget That Works for Hard Working Granite Staters
Our state’s upside-down tax code and economy is not an accident—it’s a reflection of who our leaders choose to serve. For too long, New Hampshire’s legislature has concentrated wealth and power at the top, while telling hard working people and families to expect less.
This budget doubles down on that broken system.
We need a new approach—one that funds the programs working families and small businesses depend on and expects millionaire CEOs to pay their fair share to make it happen. That means ending special deals for multinational corporations. It means investing in education, health care, and child care. And it means writing a budget that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few.
