Voting is a Right, Not a Privilege: Secretary Scanlan’s Remarks Undermine Granite Staters’ Freedoms
CONCORD – Secretary of State David Scanlan’s recent claim that it has been “too easy to vote” in New Hampshire is a direct attack on the fundamental rights of Granite Staters. Voting is not supposed to be difficult—it is a constitutional right that should be accessible to all eligible voters, not just those who can overcome arbitrary barriers. In response 603 Forward Advocacy and Engagement Director, Matt Mooshian, released the following statement:
“New Hampshire is home to some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country, and yet Secretary Scanlan and Republican lawmakers still aren’t satisfied and continue to push anti-voter rhetoric and policies that make it harder for people to participate in our democracy. Making voting more accessible does not mean making elections less secure—it means ensuring that every Granite State voter has a say in the decisions that affect our lives.
Wouldn’t it be a nice change of pace for politicians and our government to stop finding new ways to rip away our rights and instead focus on reforms we actually need like online voter registration - which makes our elections more secure and efficient for voters.
New Hampshire deserves a system that works for everyone. We will stand up to any effort at voter suppression. Our democracy is stronger when every voice is heard, and we will fight for that aspirational future.”
603 Forward envisions a thriving New Hampshire where people are free to live, work and raise a family. In our New Hampshire: democracy is protected above all else; young people have a voice in government at all levels; and policy changes to help build an inclusive, affordable and resilient state.
