Republican Lawmakers Push Forward Unpopular Legislation Further Restricting Voting Rights in New Hampshire
CONCORD — Despite public opposition, Republican lawmakers advanced a series of bills that pose a direct assault on voting rights, making it harder for voters—particularly students, young people, working families, and caregivers—to participate in our democracy. In response, Durham Town Councilor and US Marine Corps Veteran, Curtis Register, released the following statement with 603 Forward Advocacy and Engagement Director, Matt Mooshian:
“When politicians try to make it harder for some to vote, they are trying to limit who has a say in our future. We cannot stand by and let this happen. The fact, which was corroborated by the Secretary of State’s own Commission on Voter Confidence, is that New Hampshire elections are safe and secure. These bills will only prevent lawful voters from executing their constitutional right. This undermines voter turnout, trust in elected officials, and our democracy at large. Every voter deserves equal access to vote—whether in person or absentee.
This coordinated package of bills are the latest in a long series of attacks on voting rights designed to make it harder for targeted groups to cast their ballots. As elected leaders, we should encourage civic participation, not obstruct it,” said Curtis Register, Durham Town Councilor and US Marine Corps Veteran
“Instead of creating unnecessary barriers, lawmakers should focus on common-sense solutions that protect election integrity while ensuring all eligible voters—regardless of their circumstances—can participate in our democracy. If we truly want to solve problems, we should be making voting more accessible, for hardworking Granite Staters, not less,” added Mooshian.
Legislation Under Consideration:
HB323 – Removes student IDs and out-of-state IDs from acceptable identity documents.
HB289 – Limits student voting rights by restricting domicile qualifications.
HB418 – Restricts absentee voting access.
HB217 – Imposes additional documentation requirements for absentee registrants.
HB686 – Requires ID before receiving an absentee ballot.
HB608 – Mandates notarization of absentee ballots.
