Registering to vote and voting in New Hampshire as of February 2025:

To register to vote in New Hampshire, you need to be 18 years old, a US Citizen, and domiciled (live in) New Hampshire. When registering to vote, you must prove:

  • Identity: Proves you are who you say you are

    • State drivers license or non-drivers ID. student ID, passport, voter ID card from NH, or other documentation that has your name and photo.

  • Age: Proves you are 18 or older

    • Can be proven with a license or non-drivers ID, passport, birth certificate, or voter ID card.

  • Domicile: Proves where you live (this must be a physical address, not a PO Box)

    • Government ID or license, car registration, government issued check, tax document, or benefit statement

      • If you do not have any of these documents, you can attest to that fact and use a lease or rental agreement, a document from a school that includes your name and address and shows you live in campus housing, a utility bill, or other documentation that shows you are domiciled on the address you provided. You can find more information on domicile documents starting on page 3.

  • Citizenship: Proves you are US Citizen

    • Birth certificate (if born in the US), passport, naturalization papers

    • Social security cards and REAL ID cards do not prove US citizenship

Voters who are already registered in NH but moving to another town may not need to prove their citizenship, but it is recommended you bring documents proving your citizenship in the event the election officials do not have access to your voter registration in a different town.

All voters will be required to show proof of identity (photo ID) when they check in to vote or will be unable to cast a ballot.

If you don’t have any of these forms of proof of identity, you can contact your town or city clerk to receive a voucher for a voter ID card, which can be redeemed at a NH Department of Motor Vehicles location.

How can I check my voter registration status and the status of my absentee ballot?
