Support an Online Voter Registration System!
HB521 creates an online voter registration system where eligible voters can complete a new voter application, request an absentee ballot, and update their address and other voter information.
Why does it matter:
Online voter registration is a common sense reform that will help modernize New Hampshire elections by allowing voters to complete their voter registration online, adding an important and convenient option in addition to registering in person at their clerk’s office or at the polls on election day.
Voters who work irregular or long hours, lack transportation, or have disabilities may especially benefit from this legislation
Online voter registration will lead to cleaner, more up to date lists by allowing voters to more easily update their registration to reflect their current address and personal details
Allowing voters to register and update their information ahead of election day means shorter lines and waits to register and vote on election day.
Other things to know:
By adopting online voter registration, New Hampshire would join 42 other states that already offer this system to their voters
Under the system proposed in HB521, voters would use their New Hampshire drivers license or non-driver ID card to verify their identity when registering online, also adding an extra level of security during the online registration process.
All registrations completed online would then be sent to the local supervisors of the checklist or registrars for review before adding voters to the checklist, maintaining the same level of local control and review that exists in our current system.
Entering information online also reduces errors caused by handwriting or missing information, and saves time for election officials who typically must enter paper forms into the system
